Operation: Tonsils Postponed

Well, we made it all the way to the pre-op room at the hospital today but ultimately decided to delay Hank's surgery after speaking with our doctor.  There are risks associated with putting young children under general anesthesia multiple times before the age of 4 and since Hank had gone under for the removal of a small skin issue called a pyogenic granuloma when he was 10 months old, he falls into that category.  Our doctor felt that it wouldn't be harmful to delay the surgery for the short term so that's what we decided to do.

Another hard earned lesson in parenting for Matt and me; next time we will do our research earlier in the process when a decision about our child's health is on the table.  It's so hard to know if you are making the right call when it comes to this stuff, but I guess you just have to do what feels right.

Signing off with a well deserved glass of wine,

TBTB (Too Busy To Blog)

We are in the throes of a crazy Spring with lots of weekend trips, family visits and the occasional random hospital visit being thrown in the mix.  A quick summary of all that has been going on in the past few weeks:

Aunt Katie came to town on business a few weeks ago (doing some tough research on the Capella Hotel that recently opened in Georgetown; she is tasked with writing the marketing copy for their website...it's a dirty job but somebody has to do it).  We helped her out by testing out their champagne selection (acceptable) and checking out the roof top deck and infinity pool (it will do, I suppose).  Actually, the hotel is beautiful in every way and we were thrilled to get an early look at it.  Katie joined us at Hank's Friday afternoon soccer practice, which is really just Hank doing the exact opposite of whatever the coach wants.

Last weekend Matt and I went to a wedding in Maine, and Aunt Whitney and Uncle Ryan came to DC for babysitting duty.  The kids had a great time and I was impressed with Whitney and Ryan's courage in taking them both on the metro to the Mall and around to various museums.  I stopped trying to do that a long time ago! We are grateful to them both for having spent their free time watching our little ones so that we could get away!

Ryan gets his "uncle" on!
Now for the hospital visits....I mentioned in a prior post that Hank was having a sleep study done to establish if he has sleep apnea.  It was an interesting night to say the least.  He started off strong, displaying more patience that I would have while the nurse painstakingly put 20+ sensors all over his head and body.  He didn't complain and sat quietly while she did her work.  He fell right to sleep at 10pm and I thought we were free and clear...

Poor child...

Jingle gets to wear a stocking on his head too...

Well, I couldn't have been more wrong.  At midnight Hank woke up and started freaking out, trying to rip all of the sensors off and refusing to go back to sleep.  Between 12am and 4am we went through 5 cycles of freak out, calming down, falling back to sleep, waking up, freaking out etc.  It was hell on earth.  At any rate, they managed to determine that he does have severe sleep apnea due to his "monster" adenoids and he will need to stay overnight in the hospital when he has them removed.  That surgery, which will also include a tonsillectomy and possibly ear tubes, is scheduled for Monday.  We are nervous and dreading the whole experience but also know that it is for the best.   We'll be sure to let you all know how it goes next week.

And finally, this picture makes me laugh.  These are actually happy children - sometimes it's hard to tell if they are screaming in pleasure or in pain!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Room with a view

We are enjoying the best time of the year in DC - spring. The city is filled with the most beautiful variety of flowering trees, the most famous being the cherry blossoms that surround the tidal basin.

Just as gorgeous, in my opinion, are the magnolias in our front yard. We have had folks with cameras taking shots of our beauties all week. I think we have the best view from inside the house, where on the 2nd and 3rd floors the windows are filled with huge white and pink flowers, blocking everything else from view...

I'll be enjoying as many blossoms as I can today - it's going to be 85 degrees! Yippee!

Rosemary Beach

We had a lovely if chilly (highs in the low 60's - yeesh) Spring Break in Rosemary Beach in the Florida panhandle.  Aunt Whitney joined for a few days to escape the long winter of Chicago and the boys had a great time riding in a trailer attached to our bikes.  RB is a kind of Truman Show-esque in its fabricated quality, but it is picturesque, safe, quiet and filled with literally hundreds of kids on bikes.  And the beach is beautiful.  Not a bad place to spend a family vacation. We have already made plans to go back for Memorial Day when the weather should be more cooperative. Some pics from our beach trip:

All is well on the home front.  Hank and I are gearing up for a sleep study adventure tonight (for him, not me, although I could probably stand to have one done given my snoring issues).  His adenoids and tonsils are apparently "monsters" and they want to make sure he doesn't have apnea before they are removed.  Hooking him up to a hundred machines in a hospital and saying, "now go to sleep" should make for an interesting evening...wish me luck!
