Well, the time has finally come. We cannot deny any longer that we need to move from our beloved home at 1729 19th Street to a more suitable abode for a family of 6. We have become the figurative fat guy in a little coat, trying to squeeze ourselves into the most fabulous, charming and vintage little number even though it is obvious to all who can see that it just does not fit.
Naturally, we realized this some time ago when we purchased that other home (you know the one we tore down in June - more on that soon). But we always thought we could bide our time here in our cozy red brick Victorian until the new house was complete. What we didn't anticipate was the daily reminder of our boys' need for space to run and play as they got older. Or the amount of stuff that the twins arrival would bring down upon our house. Or the feeling of suffocation we would experience when we returned from the Cape after spending a month in a home that had a yard, a basement and ample living space for a family of our size. When we heard the estimated completion date of our new home was the end of next October, we realized we really had to consider renting a place in the meantime.
So we are being real grown ups and facing the music, even though we want desperately to stay in the city. We've had to move very quickly to make this happen. In order to get a12 month lease we need to move basically immediately and we've found a house in a great location that is big enough for all of us. Matt can walk to work, Gus can walk to school and Hank's school is a 10 minute drive away. There is a back yard with a treehouse and a basement and a wrap around porch. I won't spend my days driving 30 minutes to and from 2 separate schools at least twice a day.
It looks like we will be moving on Monday and will probably list this home for sale by early October. This is the smart thing to do, the practical thing to do, but boy it's hard to think about leaving so abruptly. I've never lived in a house for as long as I've lived in this one. I know every inch of it. We've remodeled every nook and cranny and lived through all of it to boot. We chose all of the hardware, the sinks, the faucets, fireplace mantles, floor stain, wall colors. We've cursed it when the heat would go out in the dead of the winter (every. single. year) and we've been so proud of it when the southern magnolias out front are in bloom and people from the neighborhood come by to have their picture taken with the enormous blossoms. I feel like its as much a part of this family as any of us.
We're going to spend the last few days we have in the house taking pictures of how we really live in it and trying to say goodbye. She was a good house and we squeezed every last bit of living out her. May she serve her next family as well as she served us. xoxo

And they're off!
It's back to school week here in the jungle, oh, I mean Washington DC. It's just that it's going to be 95 degrees all week and the humidity is such that two showers a day is the bare minimum. Anyway.
I think our kids are the last to go back to school in the northern hemisphere so we are grateful that the day is finally upon us. Hank is in Kindergarten !!!!! at WES this year and Gus is going to pre-school 3 days a week at a local church. Here are some shots of their first days at school:

The last days of summer...
*Please note that formatting for this entry got all kinds of screwed up...try to follow along as best you can!
We've been back in DC for almost 3 weeks now and have been doing our best to get over the Cape Cod blues. It hasn't been easy thanks to the 90+ degree weather we've been "enjoying" here. I try to take the kids to the pool or to the splash park everyday but we are all a bit sick of doing the same things. So last week I got inspired to take the boys to a museum (the city is filled with them and they're all free!) and I came across this amazing exhibit at the National Building Museum called The Beach. They filled a huge open space at the museum with white balls so deep that you could go swimming in them. The boys had a great time!

Summer lovin'...had me a blast
There is nothing like an extended stay in one of the best summer destinations in these United States of America to make you feel some summer loving! Summer kicked off when school let out in early June and we couldn't wait for mid-July when we could pack up and head north for Cape Cod. We rented the same house we stayed in last year in Dennis Village and really could not have enjoyed ourselves more.
This was the first real vacation we've taken as a family since the girls arrived and it was so great to be able unpack and relax for a loooong time without having to move anywhere. The beach was 100 feet down the road, the pool was 10 feet away in the back yard and just across the street we had a lake. We spent days digging in the sand, paddling on the paddle board, sailing the sun fish, splashing in the pool and eating more seafood than anyone should rightly enjoy in their lives.
The view from our bedroom...it doesn't get better. |

Gus learning how to swim without floaties - the child is a fish, and a fearless one at that.
June and Dylan learning how to roll over, starting to sit up, and getting their first two teeth (each)!
We met Curious George, built sand castles and canal systems, rode our bikes on the rail trail, went swimming in kettle ponds and took a ride on a boat called the Lobster Roll. We chased rabbits, ate ice cream, spotted meteorites and watched whales.
It was a no holds barred, fabulous vacation - the kind that makes you super-depressed when you get home to your hot, swampy, sweaty, cramped, has-no-yard, vertical-living house in the city. We are already looking forward to next year :) Some more great Cape Cod shots below and click HERE for the whole collection (all 550 shots)....Enjoy!
